From DC to Dover-Foxcroft: The Long Road to Women’s Suffrage, a Maine Humanities Council Discussion Project

Join Thompson Free Library, Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society, and facilitator Cindy Freeman Cyr as we examine the Woman’s Suffrage Movement nationally, in Maine, and here in Dover-Foxcroft. Readings and film clips will explore important but lesser known chapters in the history of suffrage, addressing issues of power, inequality, and resilience.

This program is free; all readings provided. Discussions will be held online via Zoom on Tuesdays *August 25, September 8, and September 22* from 5:30-7:00. (Please note, the original dates have changed.)

The Discussion Project is a new, flexible text-based discussion program that meets the needs of Maine communities, whether working independently or as part of an organization. Working closely with Maine Humanities Council staff, communities bring their Discussion Project to life, using an MHC-prepared plan or creating their own.

Join the Voices from HOME Oral History Project for a live storytelling event on the theme “Free” live via Zoom on Friday, July 24 at 6 pm.

Look back over the chapters of your life and ask yourself: What does the word “free” conjure up? Do you have a tale to tell about being independent, off duty, or on the loose? Have you ever received something valuable for nothing, or helped someone else in a pay-it-forward gesture? Was there a time in your life when you needed to break free from a burdensome situation or liberate yourself from certain thoughts, habits, or routines?

Whatever memory or story “free” brings to mind, we invite you to share it with us in a 4-8 minute TRUE story on story slam night!

Thompson Free Library will reopen to the public with extra safety precautions beginning on Tuesday, July 14. Library hours will be Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 am until 5 pm.

We encourage patrons to continue using our curbside pickup service, and ask all library visitors to follow these guidelines:

Do not enter the library building if you feel sick, have any symptoms of COVID-19, or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19.

Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth when inside the library building. The library will provide a face covering if requested.

Maintain physical distance of at least six feet from others.

Limit your time in the library to 30 minutes per visit, computer use included.

Sanitize hands before touching any library materials.  Hand sanitizer is provided in multiple locations around the library.

Children under age 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Only 10 visitors are allowed in the building at any given time. You may have to wait to enter the building so that we can maintain this threshold.

Continue to return library materials to the outside book drop. Please note that we are accepting library materials only and cannot accept donations at this time.

Join us for an outdoor, social-distance-friendly Bee Workshop!

Come to the Thompson Free Library on Wednesday, July 15 at 10:30 am for an outdoor Bee Workshop with Lynn Lubas! We ask that you please wear a face covering to this program.

This workshop will provide participants of all ages with an overview of the life cycle of a honeybee and a description of equipment necessary to keep bees. There will be an observation hive on site to view some working honeybees.

Lynn Lubas of Penquis Beekeepers will lead the discussion and will answer questions for participants. Lynn has been a beekeeper for approximately 8 years and has a large perennial garden and pond to help feed pollinators.

Local meteorologist & former Navy weather forecaster Ed Hummel presents a short virtual course on how weather works in this part of Maine and how it’s changing due to climate change (& will continue to change as the whole climate system continues to warm).

Ed, who also taught high school science and math at Dexter Regional High School for almost 20 years, will be glad to answer your weather-related questions! (Hmmm…wonder what he thinks about weather apps??)
