The Maine Humanities Council presented “Maine Speaks: A Day in the Life of Maine Women” on Thursday, September 5 at 6 p.m. University of New England archivist and author Jefferson Navicky shared diary entries from the Maine Women Writers Collection spanning the 19th and 20th century. These women wrote about the ordinary and extraordinary—the weather, chores, and historic moments. By sampling and discussing a selection of these diaries across time, we can connect with the common struggles and small triumphs of day-to-day life.

Morgan spoke with our director Jon Knepp about his latest book, bad reviews, minutiae in literature, identity, native perspectives, white people literature, and much more! Morgan Talty's debut novel Fire Exit follows Night of the Living Rez, a collection of short stories which won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Sue Kaufman Prize, the National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize, the New England Book Award, the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 Honor, became a national bestseller, and was a finalist for the many other awards.

Ever wonder how to safely preserve all those delicious locally grown foods? Join us for an overview of how to safely preserve food with methods such as freezing, dehydration, boiling water bath canning as well as pressure canning according to latest recommendations. Laurie Bowen is our guide through the process. She is a Food Systems Professional with UMaine Cooperative Extension & has completed the Master Food Preserver program, an intensive, hands-on training in all aspects of food preservation.

It’s salmon season again at the library! May 10-17 we had a tank of live juvenile Atlantic salmon as part of our collaboration with the Atlantic Salmon Foundation (ASF) on Thursday, May 16 at 6 p.m. for the “Penobscot River Restoration Book Reading & Discussion Panel.” Hear from people who played a central role in the biggest dam removal project in Maine history. Authors from the Penobscot Indian Nation, Penobscot River Restoration Project, The Nature Conservancy, and ASF read excerpts from the book From the Mountains to the Sea (available at TFL) that profiled this transformational project. They answered your questions about its enduring impact and benefits for fish, wildlife, and communities in Maine and around the world.

Paul Doiron came to the TFL on Tuesday, April 30 at 6 p.m. He is the author of the enormously successful Maine-based Mike Bowditch series. Locals were enthralled — we put his books on hold for our patrons all the time!) He previewed his new book “Pitch Dark” that comes out in June. A native of Maine, Paul attended Yale University and Emerson College. He is a former member of the Maine Arts Commission and past chair of the Maine Humanities Council, and Editor Emeritus of Down East Magazine. He is also a Registered Maine Guide specializing in fly fishing and lives on a trout stream in coastal Maine with his wife Kristen Lindquist.
